A Journey Begins
In 2021, Amy received a diagnosis that would change her life forever. Just a few days earlier, she had visited the ER with a swollen ankle, only to discover a 17x10x10 cm tumor in her right thigh. The ER doctor was at a loss, but fortunately, an orthopedic doctor took charge and connected her with the Sarcoma Complex at Levine Cancer Institute. Under the care of Dr. Kniesel and Dr. Anderson, Amy’s battle against sarcoma began.
The Importance of Awareness
While waiting for her initial appointment, Amy delved into research and was shocked by the lack of information available about sarcoma. This rare and hidden cancer has no detection tests, making awareness and education critical. Amy’s personal experience highlighted the urgent need for increased visibility and support for sarcoma patients.
Rewarding Moments in Fundraising
Amy’s fundraising journey has been deeply rewarding, particularly through her partnership with fellow Sarcoma Warrior, Shelby. Together, they’ve brought attention to this rare disease, sharing their stories and spreading awareness. Amy reflects on a memorable moment when she and Shelby were approached by a group of people who had never heard of sarcoma. Their conversation helped educate and inform, a small but significant victory in their mission.
Looking Ahead
Amy and Shelby continue to champion the cause, fundraising and spreading awareness through a Hungry to Help? at O’Charley’s restaurant in Hickory. Their July effort raised over $800. They have plans to hold monthly fundraising events at O’Charley’s in Concord, bringing their message to even more people. Amy believes that through these special evenings, they can make a real difference in the fight against sarcoma.
A Message of Hope
Amy’s story is one of resilience, community, and hope. Her dedication to raising awareness and funds for sarcoma research is inspiring. By sharing her journey, Amy hopes to shed light on this rare cancer and support others who are facing similar battles.
